Andamento is the ordered arrangement of lines that provides structure and pattern to a mosaic design. In my current work andamento is a stand-in for the ordered structures of belief and tradition that underpin every society, for better or worse in terms of our connection to and division from one another. My defacing of the materials that form the andamento alludes to the necessary exposure/re-examination of cultural traditions and beliefs so that they may evolve with our enlightenment and come to serve all rather than the few. The overdrawing represents the flow of awareness and action across structured lines, bringing connections of compassion and justice to the forefront.
