Rain Reflections
After a decade of figurative mosaics and portraits, I've been experimenting with capture the "mood" or feeling of specific locations. As someone who has lived in the New York City area my whole life, I find constant inspiration in the many faces of the city. This piece depicts a busy street during a rainstorm and my goal was to capture the contradictory nature of the scene; the gloomy isolation from the weather juxtaposed with the cramped hectic nature of the traffic and lights.
My process begins with the sketching or photographing on my subject/location. I then sketch out my image onto a cradled wood panel. I apply a basic underpainting on the wood for color reference. Each section's glass piece are hand cut and the glass continues around the sides if the panel creating a 3D continual effect.
Both stained glass sheets and recycled glass bottles were used in the creation of this piece.

Artist Statement
My transition from painting to collage to mosaic has allowed me to explore my love of all things contradictory: the balance between beauty/chaos, rustic/refined, broken/whole. The act of breaking/ripping materials and reconfiguring them to make a newly connected whole is an extremely labor intensive yet satisfying process that connects me to my subjects on a deeper level by building them layer-by-layer and one small piece at a time.
My most recent pieces have focused on reclaimed and recycled supplies. I find great satisfaction in transforming unexpected materials (often discarded trash) and giving them new life as a work of art. My goal is to continue explore new mediums and push the boundaries on what materials and genres constitute fine art.
